Pumpkin Riot's Haunt Masterpiece Showdown: three hand-sculpted masks, one winner

Pumpkin Riot Productions sculpts monsters. Not printed, not vac-formed in a factory somewhere: sculpted by hand in Plainfield, Illinois, cast in latex, and painted one at a time. If you have scrolled haunt accounts in October you have seen their work, and you have probably seen the yard display it all comes from, The Rite of the Jack'o'lanterns.

This year they are giving away three of those masks to one haunter. Not one each to three people. All three, to the single haunt with the most votes.

The prize

The Pumpkin Riot Fright Package is three hand-sculpted, hand-painted latex pumpkin masks:

• A tall ribbed jack with a stitched, splintering grin — the classic scarecrow silhouette done properly.
• A rotting pumpkin skull with a human face pushing through the rind and a lit eye.
• A gnarled, collapsing gourd with corn-kernel teeth set in a crooked jaw.

They are wearable, full-head masks, not shelf pieces. One winner takes the set.

The contest

Pumpkin Riot's Haunt Masterpiece Showdown 2026 runs October 1 through October 30. It is free to enter, open across the United States, and the winner is decided by community vote — the haunt with the highest vote total when voting closes at 11:59 PM Eastern on October 30.

This is year two. The 2024 Showdown was won by a home haunt in northwest Indiana that nobody outside its own county had heard of in September.

How to enter

Entry runs through the FrightMaps app:

1. Open the Contests tab. 2. Tap Pumpkin Riot's Haunt Masterpiece Showdown 2026 — it sits at the top of the list. 3. Pick the haunt you want to enter.

Your entry is one of your haunt listings, so if your haunt is not on FrightMaps yet, add it first — that part is also free, and it takes a few minutes. One entry per person. No Fright Coins, no subscription, and Pro members get no advantage in the voting.

If you just want to watch, the contest page shows every entry and takes votes from the web too.

How the voting actually works

This is the part people get wrong, so it is worth being plain about it.

Votes reset daily. Every account gets one vote per day, and the day rolls over at midnight Eastern. Over a thirty-day contest that means one supporter is worth up to thirty votes — but only if they come back. A neighbour who votes once on October 2 and forgets is worth 1. The same neighbour, reminded weekly, is worth 20.

Entering early matters more than entering well. An entry posted October 1 has thirty days of voting available. One posted October 25 has five. In the 2024 Showdown every one of the top five finishers had entered on the first day entries were open, and that is not because the five best haunts in the country all happened to be early risers.

Ties break to the earlier entry. Same reason.

So the shape of a winning run is not "build something spectacular in week four." It is: enter on day one, then give people a reason to open the app again every few days.

What actually moves votes

Things that worked for entries that finished high in past contests:

• A sign at the end of the driveway. Visitors are already standing in front of your display with a phone in their hand. A QR code on a stake converts better than anything you post online. Haunt Clubs members can generate a printable yard sign for this.
• Photos taken after dark, with the lights on. Daylight photos of a Halloween display look like a pile of props in a yard. Three or four night shots at different angles do more for you than twenty daytime ones.
• A weekly nudge, not a daily one. Posting "vote for us" every single day burns out the people most likely to keep voting. Once a week, with a new photo each time, holds up for a month.
• Your local Halloween group. One post in an active neighbourhood or regional haunt group reliably outperforms a general public post, because those people vote more than once.

The rules, briefly

Open to legal U.S. residents 18 and over with a FrightMaps account. Free to enter, no purchase of any kind, one entry per person, one vote per account per day. The prize is supplied by Pumpkin Riot Productions; FrightMaps is the contest sponsor and administrator. Apple is not a sponsor of, and is not involved in, this contest. Dates

• October 1 — entries and voting open, 12:00 AM Eastern.
• October 30 — entries and voting close, 11:59 PM Eastern.
• On or about October 31 — the winner is notified in the app and by email.
