Quick answer: Halloween 2026 falls on Saturday, October 31. Most towns that set trick-or-treat hours are keeping Halloween night, and the most common window is 6 to 8 p.m.. Plenty of towns pick a different evening or set their own times, though, so check yours: look up your town's trick-or-treat times.

We gathered the hours for 3,939 towns and cities in 37 states. Every entry links to the announcement it came from, and we update the pages as towns post their 2026 hours through October.

How to find your town's trick-or-treat hours

• Pick your state on the main list, or from the state list below.
• Find your county, then your town. Every town has its own page.
• Read the box at the top. It gives the date, the start and end time, the rain date if there is one, and where the hours came from: the town itself, its police department, or a local news list.

If your town hasn't posted 2026 hours yet, its page says so and shows last year's hours, clearly marked, so you know roughly what to expect.

Where towns set trick-or-treat hours

Official trick-or-treat hours are a Northeast and Midwest tradition. Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and New Hampshire each have hundreds of towns that set a night and a time. Across much of the South and the West, cities leave it to families, and the organized trick-or-treat happens downtown instead.

What towns have decided for 2026

As of September 25, 431 towns have posted their 2026 hours, and 349 of them are keeping Saturday, October 31. Another 50 picked Thursday, October 29, and 18 picked Friday, October 30.

The Thursday towns are clustered. Most Central Ohio towns that have posted chose October 29, including Columbus, Dublin, Westerville, Hilliard, Upper Arlington and Gahanna. In Pennsylvania, so did Lebanon County, the State College area and Altoona.

What time is trick-or-treat?

Among the 3,617 towns whose 2025 hours we list, 6 to 8 p.m. was the most common window, used by 38%. Next came 5 to 7 p.m., at 13%. Nearly all of them (97%) wrapped up by 8 p.m.

Early starts are usually for small children, and later ones for towns with a long walking route. Whatever the window, the town's page has the exact times.

Beggars' Night 2026

In Central Ohio and around Des Moines, trick-or-treat night is called Beggars' Night, and it isn't always on Halloween. This year most Central Ohio towns that have posted are going Thursday, October 29, while most Des Moines-area towns are on Halloween itself. Here's where each town stands.

If your town doesn't set official hours

Many cities, especially in the South and the West, don't set trick-or-treat hours at all. Families go out on Halloween night, and some cities suggest a window or an end time instead; those appear on our lists as suggested hours.

In those states, downtowns and business districts often run their own trick-or-treat on or before Halloween. We list those as events, with their date and time, so you can tell them apart from town-wide hours.

Rain dates and last-minute changes

Weather moves trick-or-treat more often than you'd think. Last year, rain on Thursday, October 30 pushed towns across Ohio and West Virginia to another night.

Many towns publish a rain date with their hours, and it's in the box on the town's page. On the day itself, check your town's own website or social media before you head out.

Trick-or-treat tips for Halloween 2026

• Porch light on usually means a house is handing out candy, and many towns ask residents to use it that way.
• Check for an age limit. A few towns set one, often 12 or 14 and under, and it's listed on the town's page when they do.

Each entry comes from a town, police or county announcement, or from a local news list that compiled them. Before an entry goes on the site, we re-open its source and check the date and the times against it. When two unofficial sources disagree, we leave the town off rather than guess. Last year's hours are always labeled as last year's.
